The Sherpas are one of the best known ethnic groups in Nepal because of their association with tourism and mountaineering. Native to the Everest region, this Tibetan like people are very fit and strong. This makes them excellent in the jobs they obtain as guides and porters for the many mountain expeditions which come to Nepal. These jobs are the main occupation for Sherpa men, but they also raise yak, weave carpets for sale, and run small restaurants or shops catering to trekkers who come through their villages. Their language is very similar to Tibetan.
The Sherpas are Buddhists of the Nyingpma sect. They are quite religious, and every Sherpa home has a corner set aside for their statues and pictures of Buddha, incense and other things used in worship. Their religious leaders, or lamas, play a very significant role in Sherpa festivals, and consultation on any major decision. In addition to traditional Tibetan Buddhism, it is said they also worship Mt. Everest and Mt. Twache, which they think of as a deity who rides on his magical horse and brings protection to Sherpa people at all times.
Quite a few Sherpas are aware that Christianity exists and have met Christians through tourist contact, but only a very few have actually heard the gospel message or understand who Jesus is. Village Sherpas often verbally abuse and even threaten physical abuse to those who become believers. They are quite protective of their cultural and religious identity. Those living in Kathmandu however, are very open to and even seeking change in their lives in general. These Sherpas often show interest and are much more responsive to the gospel.
Key Prayer Points:
- Many who have targeted or worked with the Sherpa have been plagued by sickness, and even unusual deaths. Thus, spiritual warfare is needed against the occult or tantric side of Tibetan Buddhism.
|
- Alcoholism is a major problem within this group. Pray for God to set them free from their desire to drink.
|
- Pray against the spirit of anger that is very strong in this group.
|
- Pray against the authority that the lamas have over this group.
