The Kumal are a tribe of people who make earthenware pots and sell them to the surrounding villagers and those of other tribes. Because of this occupation, they are intermixed with other groups. The Kumals however, do have their own culture and language. Most Kumals also speak Nepali since interaction with other groups is a part of their occupation. Their own language, however, is preferred in their homes and with other Kumals.
The Kumals are considered a low caste group and they have a rather low economic status as well. They trade their pots, make baskets and home-made alcohol to sell, as well as fishing and working as labourers in other's fields. In spite of these efforts, they make a very small profit if any and have been unable to progress economically.
The Kumals have a custom of gathering in homes to sing and dance the entire night. These gatherings are very popular and an important part of their culture.
Their main religion is a traditional form of Hinduism. They believe in heaven, earth, sin, virtue, fate, etc. and worship the traditional Hindu pantheon of gods. Most Kumals have heard the gospel message through the Tamang Christians living near them. Although they will allow people to come and share freely about Christ in their villages and many outreaches have been done amongst the Kumals, there has been little response. Only a very small number of Kumals have come to know the Lord and there is still no indigenous Kumali church.
Key Prayer Points:
- They are afraid of breaking from their group and their culture. Pray that God would give them the courage to live for Him even if it means breaking away from their traditions or even their own people.
|
- Alcoholism is a major problem in this group. Pray for God to deliver them from this.
|
- The men often beat their wives and show them little or no respect. Pray for conviction to come on the men when they do harmful things to their wives.
|
- They make animal sacrifices to appease the gods. Pray for the people to be set free from their fear of demonic spirits
