Day 2 - Brahman Nationality

Scattered throughout Nepal

Population: Language: Religion:
2,400,000 Nepali Hinduism

The Brahmin migrated from India into Nepal and are the highest caste in Hinduism. The Brahmin are the only ones who can perform the duties of a priest. In the past, all Brahmin were expected to be priests, but today they have the freedom to choose any occupation they like. Many of the Brahman social customs come from the Hindu Scriptures. Due to their influence and caste status, many of the positions of government in Nepal are held by Brahmin. Loss of status and position which would result often make Brahmin quite closed or resistant to the Christian message.

The physical features of Brahmin generally include that of a long head and a long, pointed, narrow nose. They are fair in complexion and tall in stature. A typical Brahman wears a pair of tight "pyjamas", a tobeda (tight shirt), a jacket, a cummerband (kind of suspender), uparna (white cloth hanging from his left shoulder) and a Nepali cap. A Brahmanee (lady Brahman) wears a cholo (blouse) and fariya (sari).

When one does become a Christian, they lose their high caste status and are considered an "untouchable." However, high school students and others who are educated are more open to Christianity because they can see and understand the evil behind the Hindu religion. If another Brahman tells them of a good God who loves and created them, they are often very open and willing to listen. They will not however, listen to lower castes because they don't respect them.

Winning the Brahmin to Christ is a key to opening Nepal. Because they are the only ones who can become Hindu priests, they are looked upon by the Hindu community as being spiritual leaders. In Hinduism, it is a great sin to oppose a Brahman; therefore, people from all castes respect them when they teach, even if they're teaching about Christ. They also do not have an inferiority complex like most low-caste Nepalis and therefore are very bold and unafraid to preach the gospel once they accept Christ.

Key Prayer Points:

  • Pray against the power of darkness behind the idols.
  • Pray that they will be set free from doing their demonic rituals.
  • Pray against the spirit of pride within this group.
  • Pray against the fear that they have of losing their high positions and the respect of their peers.
